New NatureVolve? Inviting Fiction in 2025

There has been a quiet pause on NatureVolve magazine in the past year as we think about our present and our future in these changing times. We now have exciting news that NatureVolve Magazine will be restarting! This will be through opening up a special issue soon, to restart in the new year, 2025, but with some new emphasis towards fiction, in addition to research based sciences.

Over the past years we have relished sharing all forms of the arts across all subsets of science and STEM academic research topics. This has included illustration, painting, and craft. So far, it has been fantastically visual. Next, we wish to explore the intersection where the written word and imagination meet. There has been a largely "left behind" Written Word section which in our next phase, we hope to shine a stronger light on.

Where Fiction will Fit: Literary open call 2025

Fiction and poetry have been featured before in our Written Word section, but we are hoping to find new ways of sharing works of fiction and the ideas of authors inspired by nature and science. Naturally, this will include all aspects of fiction and literary works which fit within nature and science inspired themes. Of course, this includes science fiction in itself, particularly "grounded" science fiction, which consider the speculative future of our planet under the growing power of climate change.

This does not mean we will be forgetting to including fact-based stories for research dissemination, or the ideas of scientists or science communicators too. Science and Scicomm will merge and remain as strong as ever, with Fiction replacing the Written Word section.

After our special edition Science & Fiction we will consider continuing with quarterly magazine releases again throughout the year, where each magazine has a theme, aligning the Science and Fiction features that are showcased.

Submitting to the open call for the 2025 special edition

Members will continue to be core to the development of these issues, and we welcome submissions for the special edition Science & Fiction and subsequent future releases of NatureVolve Magazine.

We hope the news is positive for our community as we step into a new phase for NatureVolve, deeper into how nature inspires scientists, and how science inspires authors of fiction.
